Ephesians 4:12; Matthew 28:18-20
1. Provide Biblical leadership (coordinate with leadership team staff) (Hebrews 13:7; Acts 20:28; I Timothy 5:17)
a. To provide vision
i. Setting direction
ii. Developing strategies that facilitate excellence and growth
iii. Mobilize people and resources
b. To establish policy (orderly procedures for getting things done)
c. To provide oversigh and pastoral care (I Peter 5:1-3; Acts 20:28)
i. Ensure shepherding is takin place (ie: connection groups, etc.)
ii. Ensure new Christians are brought through a process of spiritual development (discipleship)
d. To lead the church
i. Represent God and not the congregation
ii. Manage and plan effectively
iii. Have an attitutde of reasonable flexibility (are we defending the faith or tradition?)
iv. Support other leaders
v. Willing to delegate
vi. Confront problems
2. Protect doctrine and unity (Acts 15:2; Titus 1:9; Acts 20:28-30)
a. Study The Word
b. Know what is being taught and who is teaching
c. Discipline where necessary (Matthew 18:15-20; I Timothy 5:19-21)
d. Take the responsibility of leadership seriously (Romans 12:8)
3. Practice prayer and other spiritual disciplines (James 5:14-15a; I Timothy 3:2; Titus 5:9)
a. Preach
b. Teach
c. Mentor
d. Set example living a life modeling the scriptures
i. Have a sense of calling (I Peter 5:1-4)
ii. Possess certain competencies (I Timothy 3:1-7; 5:17-22; Titus 1:5-9)
1. Exceptional Bible Knowledge
2. Able to teach others suck biblical knowledge
3. Be a proven steward, both in the church and in the home
4. Uncommon discernment, particularly in selecting other spiritual leaders
5. Forward looking and thinking in a visionary sense
6. Able to lead others to Christ, articulating salvation
7. Pastoral skills of shepherding, extending sympathy, etc.
iii. A well know character: above reproach (I Timothy 3:2), and blameless (Titus 1:6),
his spiritual integrity is an essential criteria for being selected. An elder candidate must:
1. Have a healthy sense of humility
2. Pursue righteousness while fleeing from evil
3. Desire a clear consciense
4. Model marital fidelity and manage his family well, as reflected by obedient, respectful children
5. Be an encourager and peacemaker
iv. Cooperation: The ability to work in a group combines trust and getting things done
